Diplomatic tensions are at their peak. In retaliation for Emmanuel Macron's refusal to join his new "Peace Council," of which he aspires to become "president for life," no less, Donald Trump is threatening to impose prohibitive tariffs of 200% on French wines and champagnes, plunging the industry into uncertainty.
Never before has a diplomatic crisis escalated so rapidly into a trade war. In the space of three days, what began as a political disagreement over the management of the post-war situation in Gaza has transformed into a direct threat to the French economy. This blackmail, orchestrated by the White House, targets a national symbol: winemaking.
The escalation began with Paris's rejection of a controversial American initiative, triggering an immediate response from the president-elect. This "tariff diplomacy" now puts the European Union in a difficult position, forcing it to defend its interests against a long-standing partner that has become unpredictable.
A Refusal Motivated by Respect for UN Institutions
The origin of the crisis dates back to Friday, January 17. Donald Trump unveiled his plan for a “Peace Council,” a body intended to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza and post-Hamas governance. This structure, perceived as a competing alternative to the UN, imposes drastic conditions: a permanent seat would require a financial contribution of one billion dollars (Morocco has just announced its intention to become a member, according to Le Parisien).
France’s response was swift. Between January 19 and 20, the Élysée Palace indicated that it did not intend to accept this invitation. For Paris, circumventing the fundamental principles of the United Nations is out of the question. Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to join the Peace Council was immediately perceived as an affront by the White House occupant, especially since Berlin also expressed reservations, advocating for European consultation.
